Owing to the cooperative nature of the Micro Four Thirds standard, lenses for the system have been produced by a number of companies. Whereas a company like Sigma usually produces lenses for another company's cameras without the official blessing of that company — and therefore must design its equipment through reverse-engineering — as it is signed up as a Four-Thirds partner it has access to all the design specifications and technologies as laid out by Olympus and Panasonic in the Micro Four Thirds specifications. All Micro Four Thirds lenses are compatible with other Micro Four Thirds system bodies.

Since the diagonal measurement of the Micro Four Thirds system sensor is roughly half that of a standard 135 format (a.k.a. 35mm) film frame, the focal lengths of the lenses below should be doubled to find their effective focal length equivalents in so called "full frame".

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital lenses[]

All Olympus M.Zuiko Digital lenses are designed for the Micro Four Thirds image sensor format. They all feature auto focus and optimized optical designs.

Olympus divides its M.Zuiko Digital range into three tiers of features, build quality and price:

  • Standard: consumer grade, lightweight, multi focal length zoom lenses
  • Premium: mid grade, single focal length prime lenses
  • PRO: professional grade, zoom and prime lenses which are weather-sealed and typically larger and heavier

Standard lenses[]

The lenses in this range are 'consumer grade' zooms. Many are not weather-sealed and have lower build quality and smaller maximum apertures than their higher tier counterparts, but are more compact and lighter weight. They are varifocal with a decreasing maximum aperture as the focal length increases.

  • M.Zuiko Digital ED 9–18mm f/4.0–5.6 — an ultra compact wide-angle zoom lens. It features a collapsible design which allows the lens to be significantly shorter when not shooting. The optical design consists of twelve elements in eight groups. The lens weighs just 155 grams.[1]
  • M.Zuiko Digital ED 12–50mm f/3.5–6.3 EZ — a wide-angle to short-telephoto electronic zoom lens. It features an internal zoom mechanism, meaning there is no increase in the overall length of the lens over its zoom range. The optical design includes 10 elements (2 of which are aspherical) in 9 groups. A macro mode allows image magnification up to 0.36x. The lens is dust and splash proof.[2]
  • M.Zuiko Digital ED 12–200mm f/3.5–6.3 — a 16.6x zoom lens offering wide-angle to telephoto perspective. The lens design consists of 11 groups of 16 elements, including 3 aspherical elements and several extra-low dispertion (ED) elements. The lens is dust and splash proof.[3]
  • M.Zuiko Digital ED 14–42mm f/3.5–5.6 EZ — a wide-angle to short-telephoto electronic zoom lens. It features a retracting ultra-thin "pancake" design for a length of just 22.5mm when stowed. The optical design includes seven groups of eight elements three of which are aspherical. The lens weighs just 93 grams.[4]
  • M.Zuiko Digital ED 14–42mm f/3.5–5.6 II R — a wide-angle to short-telephoto 3x zoom lens. It features a manually collapsible design to decrease size when not in use. The optical design includes seven groups of eight elements three of which are aspherical. This is the third iteration of this design; it replaced the "II" version from which it differs only cosmetically.[5]
  • M.Zuiko Digital ED 14–150mm f/4.0–5.6 II — a 10.7x zoom in a compact, dustproof and splashproof package makes this a terrific travel lens. It features fifteen elements in eleven groups. It replaced an earlier version adding dust and moisture resistance, improved lens coating and refreshed cosmetics.[6]
  • M.Zuiko Digital ED 40–150mm f/4.0–5.6 R — a compact and lightweight telephoto zoom lens. Optical design includes ten groups of 13 elements in a package weighing just 190 grams. This lens replaced the earlier (non "R") version; the primary difference is improved autofocus performance along with cosmetic changes.[7]
  • M.Zuiko Digital ED 75–300mm f/4.8–6.7 II — a lightweight, super-telephoto zoom lens great for sports and wildlife photography. Optical design features 18 elements in 13 groups. It replaced an earlier version with the only changes being improved lens coating and refreshed cosmetics.[8]

  • EZElectronic Zoom. A zooming mechanism which can be controlled electronically, allowing smooth, quiet, stable zooming at a constant rate. This can be particularly useful when shooting video.
  • Focus Stacking — a system which captures multiple images at slightly different focal positions and then combines them into a single image allowing an increase of the depth of field in the resultant composite image.
  • ISImage Stabilization. A mechanism which moves either the lens elements (in-lens image stabilization) or the sensor itself (in-body image stabilization) to counter external movement.
  • Sync IS — an Image Stabilization system which coordinates movement of both internal lens elements and the sensor itself to counter external movement.

Panasonic Lumix G and Leica DG lenses[]

As a founding partner in the Micro Four Thirds consortium, Panasonic has produced a wide array of lenses for the system under its Lumix brand.

Panasonic brands their "consumer" lenses for the system under the "Lumix G" label. Their higher-end offerings are designed in partnership with Leica and sold under the "Leica DG" brand.

  • Panasonic Leica DG Elmarit 200mm f/2.8 [H-ES200] — a compact super-telephoto single focal length lens that is perfect for wildlife and outdoor sports photography. Dust, splash, and freeze resistant design allows use in any weather while Power O.I.S. allows handheld shooting at usable shutter speeds. Bundled DMW-TC14 1.4x teleconverter extends focal length to 280mm; available DMW-TC20 2x teleconverter allows even more reach.[81]

Discontinued Leica DG lenses[]

  • Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH [H-X025] — a wide aperture standard single focal length lens that is great for indoor and night-time shooting. Delivers both excellent sharpness and softly focused backgrounds. Replaced in 2019 with a version II that is optically identical but adds weather sealing.[82]

Terminology[]

  • Mega O.I.S. — First version of Panasonic's in-lens optical image stabilization system which moves internal lens elements to counter external movement.
  • Power O.I.S. — Second version of Panasonic's in-lens optical image stabilization system which moves internal lens elements to counter external movement.
  • Dual IS — an image stabilization system which coordinates movement of both internal lens elements and the sensor itself to counter external movement.

Sigma Micro Four Thirds lenses[]

2596738761_c22734e217_m.jpg

The majority of Sigma lenses released for the Micro Four Thirds system are simply adaptations of lenses Sigma released also for APS-C or 35mm formats.

Terminology[]

  • DC — Lenses marked with this code are designed for digital sensors, and therefore do not have an image circle large enough to suit the full-frame bodies of the system they are mounted for (not a problem for a Four Thirds CCD).
  • EX — Lenses with a better external finish, reportedly to reflect the superior build and optical quality.

Conversions to the Micro Four Thirds mount[]

The distance between film plane and lens flange of the Micro Four Thirds system is smaller than that of most other systems. This allows enterprising people to adapt older SLR and video lenses for these cameras.

With dedicated lens adapter[]

Aftermarket adapters allow non-destructive coupling between Micro Four Thirds bodies and older manual-focus lenses.
